An Update to Mom’s Garden. The strawberry circle is overflowing with runners – you can’t see the top 2 layers of rock/bed anymore. The Fuchsia are lush with huge gaudy blooms while the hydrangea turn wine coloured to shut down … Continue reading

I love the fall season of the garden – there’s so much to do – collecting seeds, dead heading, trimming, shutting down parts for winter but enjoying the lush flowers that bloom in fall too. Plus, the ever present Vancouver … Continue reading

Mom’s Garden

Just wanted to give an idea of where I get my gardening interest.

My grandmother had pretty much an entire green body, never mind just the thumb.

My Mom has continued that and both my sister and I – despite hating gardening as teenagers – are both involved in gardening now.

The dirt project that we completed was nothing compared to my Mom’s – we had a mere 2 dumptruck loads of dirt, while my Mom had 4 and half.

They did a lot of rock sifting the hard way and my sister turned the grassy boulevard into this rock art representation of a river, using different sized rocks and using some leafy plants.

They recently added this neat fence with chicks n hens in front and columbines in behind with the rose circle just beyond …

Making a tiered bed for the strawberries and defining the levels with river rocks makes a stunning and tasty garden addition.

Big Box Planting

Well, we’re finished the dirt sifting and onto the planting. We’ve got a nice start with pansies!

next decor project:

when sifting the dirt, we uncovered this partial tree trunk, so we’re drilling a hole to add a plant and will leave it off centre as a show peice!

Here’s all three front boxes – the 2 level side yard, the front big box and you can just see the under the windows box!

another little decor item – I made this title with 3-d kitty in a ceramic class a few years ago  – there’s a few of them scattered in the garden – bird, fish, gecko and matching colour tiles – they were going to go on a bathroom wall, but I never put them up.

Finished the dirt project

box done

We finished shifting the dirt as deep as we needed to – sad to return the trusty shifting rack – but we got enough rocks for the rock garden and started planting the chicks n hens and other rock garden plants

now we’re just planting the 2 tier box with pansies, dahlias, lilies and a whole bunch of bulbs to pop up next spring
